MOVING THROUGH THE ARCHIVE (2022)
In the fall of 2019, director/curator Marie-Hélène Leblanc invited Hanna Sybille Müller to work with the visual and textual archives produced by Galerie UQO since its foundation in 2015. Her contemporary dance interpretation of the projects, activities, movements, and administrative archives of the gallery and the people who work with it is part of a willingness to question the medium of the exhibition and everything that is inherent to it. The presentation of the results of this project, which initially would have occurred this fall in a series of live performances, has been rescheduled to the winter of 2022.Moving through the archive consists of three choreographical approaches
The dis/embodied archive
The first part questions the instability of the archive—its shifting and fragmentary nature. The dispersal of fragmented information specific to the archive calls for imaginary investment and creation. The dancer/choreographer Hanna Sybille Müller will collect information about past exhibitions, photos, administrative documents, anecdotes and memories from staff and visitors to develop a dis/embodied dance version of the past exhibitions. Through her body, gestures and words, she will remember what was exhibited, how it was exhibited and how (some) people remember it. She will also add something that wasn’t there; a detail that could not be realized at the time or that the artist or visitor has remembered but was never actually included. This fictional detail/thing will be developed through interviews with former exhibiting artists, curators, staff and visitors who experienced the exhibition.
Bouncing off the archive
In the second part, Müller will share her dis/embodied archive findings with two dancers, Nate Yaffe and Lauren Semeschuk, with whom she will develop a trio. When the residency and project were postponed due to the pandemic, a week of rehearsals still took place in Montreal’s Parc du Mont-Royal in June 2020. During that time and still today, the future of the performing arts remains uncertain and all studios and theatres are closed. While Hanna, Nate and Lauren were researching gestures in relation to Galerie UQO’s archives, the rehearsal week also became a snap-shot of dance, or the need to “dance together” during the pandemic, when physical distancing is now part of everyone’s daily choreography. The movement material that came into being is composed of big, powerful whole body movements interwoven with delicate hand and head gestures, and a play with the gaze.
The archive of gestures
Müller will collect gestures that were performed by the gallery’s staff when an exhibition was being prepared, inaugurated or discussed, and will then compose them in a score. Working with each staff member, she will discuss how their gestures should be performed. The choreography will consist of an accumulation of the staff’s physical gestures over a 5-year period performed in one day.

SE MOUVOIR DANS L'ARCHIVE (2022)
À l’automne 2019, la directrice/commissaire Marie-Hélène Leblanc a invité Hanna Sybille Müller à travailler avec les archives visuelles et textuelles produites par la Galerie UQO depuis sa fondation en 2015. L’interprétation par la danse contemporaine des projets, des activités, des mouvements et des archives administratives de la galerie et des gens qui la côtoient est une proposition qui s’inscrit dans une volonté de questionner le médium de l’exposition et tout ce qu’il sous-tend. La présentation des résultats de ce projet, qui devaient initialement être dévoilés au public cet automne par une série de performances, est reportée au hiver 2022.
Se mouvoir dans l’archive se compose de trois approches chorégraphiques
L’archive dés/incarnée
La première partie interroge l’instabilité de l’archive, sa nature changeante et fragmentaire. L’information dispersée et fragmentée propre à l’archive nécessite une implication créative et imaginative. La danseuse et chorégraphe Hanna Sybille Müller recueillera des informations sur les expositions passées tenues à la galerie : photos, documents administratifs, anecdotes et souvenirs des membres du personnel et des visiteurs, afin de développer une chorégraphie en version dés/incarnée des expositions passées. Par l’expression de son corps, de sa gestuelle et de ses paroles, elle se remémorera ce qui a été exposé, comment il l’a été, et comment (certaines) personnes s’en souviennent. Sa prestation ajoutera à l’exposition un élément qui n’y figurait pas, un détail qui n’a pas pu être réalisé à l’époque, ou dont l’artiste ou le visiteur se souviennent, mais qui n’était pas réellement présent. L’addition de ce détail fictif sera élaborée grâce aux entretiens menés avec les artistes, commissaires, employé(e)s et visiteur(se)s qui ont participé à l’expérience de l’exposition.
Ricocher sur l’archive
Dans la deuxième partie, Müller partagera ses découvertes d’archive dés/incarnée avec un danseur et une danseuse, Nate Yaffe et Lauren Semeschuk, avec qui elle développera une formation en trio. Au moment où la résidence et le projet ont dû être reportés en raison de la pandémie, une semaine de répétitions a eu lieu au Parc du Mont-Royal de Montréal en juin 2020. Depuis lors et encore aujourd’hui, l’avenir des arts vivants demeure incertain et tous les studios et théâtres sont fermés. Durant la période de recherche de Hanna, Nate et Lauren portant sur des gestes en relation avec les archives de la Galerie UQO, la semaine de répétitions est également devenue un instantané de la danse, l’expression de la nécessité de « danser ensemble » pendant la pandémie, alors que la distanciation physique fait maintenant partie de la chorégraphie quotidienne de chacun. La dynamique concrète qui en a découlé est composée de mouvements corporels larges et puissants, entrelacés de gestes délicats de la main et de la tête, et de jeux de regards.
L’archive des gestes
Müller colligera les gestes qui ont été posés par le personnel de la galerie lors des discussions autour de la préparation et de l’inauguration d’une exposition, et elle les synthétisera ensuite en une partition. Elle travaillera en étroite collaboration avec chaque membre du personnel avec qui elle discutera de la manière adéquate d’exécuter leurs gestes. La chorégraphie qui en résultera deviendra le cumul de cinq années de gestes physiques du personnel, exécutés en une journée.
